Main Activities
Noh is a traditional performing art consisting of dance, chanting, and musical accompaniment, which was perfected during the Muromachi Period (around 650 years ago) by Kan’ami and Zeami. The activities of our Noh Club involve practicing “Shimai” and “Utai” in preparation for performances. “Shimai” refers to selected highlights from Noh plays, performed with a fan as a dance piece. “Utai” refers to the chants that accompany the dialogue or dances in Noh plays.
The Noh Club provides more than three performance opportunities each year, including spring and autumn showcases and the Ryūbi Festival. During performances, members wear traditional attire such as kimono, hakama, and tabi, while dancing with a fan. The club’s advisor, Fusako Yamazaki, is a Noh performer and a former professor at our university. Since Yamazaki-sensei is a performer of the Kanze school of Noh, we focus on practicing Kanze-style Noh.
