KUAS Professor Osamu Tabata Named an IEEE Fellow
Osamu Tabata, a professor at the Nagamori Institute of Actuators, has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) in recognition of his contributions to the development and commercialization of miniature electromechanical systems. Fellow is the highest grade of IEEE membership.
The IEEE is the world’s leading technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. With more than 400,000 members in 160 countries, the IEEE is a leading authority in many fields including aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications, biomedical engineering, electric power, and consumer electronics. The grade of Fellow is conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors upon a person with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE’s fields of interest. It is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement. Fewer than one in a thousand IEEE members are selected to become Fellows each year.
During a career spanning 15 years in industry and 24 years in academia, Professor Tabata has made many pioneering contributions to anisotropic (orientation-dependent) etching of silicon, thin film mechanical property characterization, three-dimensional micro-fabrication, and the integration of DNA and cells with micro/nano electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS). He is one of the very few people who excel in both academic research and industrial product development, and who consequently have an enormous impact on the wellbeing of society.
