Professor Tabata received an Outstanding Paper award
Osamu TABATA, a professor at the Nagamori Institute of Actuators specialising in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) and DNA nanotechnology, has been awarded a Certificate of Merit for an Outstanding Paper by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineering. The award celebrates the achievements described in the paper Temperature Difference Measurement of Cleaved Surface Nanogaps Using Micro-Raman Spectroscopy (by Masaki Shimofuri, Yasuaki Mori, Yoshikazu Hirai, Tomoyuki Tsuchiya, and Osamu Tabata) which was presented at the 2018 Annual Meeting of the society’s Micro-Nano Science and Technology Division. The presentation was made by a student formerly supervised by Professor Tabata at Kyoto University.
The paper describes research clarifying the mechanism of the specific heat transport phenomenon observed when two materials are separated by a very narrow gap of several nanometers. The authors proposed a method for making nanogap electrodes having a relatively large area (tens of μm squared) and narrow gap (ranging from tens to hundreds of nanometers wide) by exploiting the advantages of interplanar cleaving in monocrystalline silicon. They fabricated a MEMS device with a heater and an electrostatic actuator to control the temperature and the size of a nanogap. With this device they used Raman spectroscopy to measure the temperature difference between two parallel plate electrodes separated by the nanogap, and succeeded in verifying the near-field radiative heat transfer between them. The results of this research are expected to be applied in a wide range of fields and could dramatically improve the thermoelectric conversion efficiency of equipment that generates electricity from waste heat.
Professor Tabata will become the inaugural Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at KUAS from April 2020.
