Greeting from the President
Today, I am pleased to welcome you to our university and congratulate you on your successful completion of our comprehensive admissions process. Along with hope for the future, some of you may be feeling a hint of anxiety. However, I want to assure you that you have made an excellent choice by enrolling at KUAS, and that the next four years will be of great value to you.
The name of our university is Kyoto University of Advanced Science, but as you all know, we are not just a university of science. KUAS is a comprehensive university with a Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, a Faculty of Humanities, a Faculty of Bioenvironmental Sciences, a Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, and a Faculty of Engineering. With about 4,000 students and 200 faculty members, we are a compact but powerful university that offers a wide range of programs to help students develop the talents they need to pursue their dreams.
At KUAS, we believe that the acquisition of critical aptitudes for success is supported by three “pillars”. The first pillar is "expertise". Naturally, specialized knowledge is key to any university program, and KUAS provides an environment where students can study to become experts in the fields of economics and business administration, the humanities, bioenvironmental sciences, health and medical sciences, and engineering. All of our faculty members are at the top of their field.
The second pillar is "basic academic literacy for international success". To realize this pillar, KUAS has designed an array of common core courses that teach the liberal arts. Liberal arts courses are not just “general education”. Like the "arts" in “martial arts”, the liberal arts represent intellectual survival skills. They are the basic tools required to succeed in a global society, and the very core of knowledge. At KUAS, we have prepared liberal arts courses that will allow our graduates to enhance their capacity for cooperation by obtaining abilities such as foresight, basic knowledge-gathering abilities, foreign languages, intercultural literacy, leadership, and empathy. KUAS also offers programs that allow students to become masters of cultures and religions so that their values may be preserved for future generations.
The third pillar is "practical English acquisition”. KUAS now has programs taught entirely in English, and the university as a whole is undergoing internationalization as our students from overseas increase in number. KUAS is also engaged in exchanges with universities and internships at companies located all over the world. We believe that English is now a basic requirement for graduation. You may think that this is a "tough" requirement, but we have allocated the study hours and designed the programs necessary to help you acquire English. You will need to work hard, but our teachers will help you every step of the way.
First of all, I would like to assure you that you have made a good choice, and that these four years will be very rewarding for you. We have prepared a comprehensive roster of life skills from which you can choose. It is up to you to choose from that roster, but if you are unsure, please come and talk to us, and the faculty and staff will do their best to assist you.
By the time you graduate from this university, you will be well on the way to achieving your dreams and be ready for success in Japan or overseas, no matter what the future holds.
Once again, if you have any questions about university life or your future, please do not hesitate to consult with your teachers and the university staff.
Our university is compact, powerful and friendly, and today I am happy to welcome you to our campus community. Enjoy your time and studies at KUAS.
Congratulations!
President MAEDA Masafumi
Greetings from Chairman Nagamori

Today, I would like to give you my sincere congratulations on your entrance to our university.
Three years ago, I became involved in the management of this university and changed its name to Kyoto University of Advanced Science. Therefore, I would like to call those of you in the Faculty of Engineering, which was newly established just last year, our second class of KUAS engineering students, and the rest of you belong to the third class of our other faculties. Seeing you all walk in proudly, I realized how much the university has changed in the past three years. We are amid big reforms at our university, and things will continue to change dramatically on campus. I hope that all of you will join in on this reformation. Today, I came here to share my passion with all of you.
I am the owner of a business. I was born the youngest son of a poor farmer, and at the age of 28, I started a company called Nidec Corporation with three employees in my shed. It has been 48 years since then. Today, Nidec is the largest and most powerful motor company in the world, with 125,000 employees spread across more than 300 group companies in 45 countries. During that time, we have hired about 10,000 students. Analysis shows that the people who are capable of groundbreaking inventions, product development, and top sales are not necessarily all graduates of famous universities. Rather, the reality is that the system is changing to one of meritocracy, with no regard to academic background.
However, in Japan, people are still inclined to focus on the "deviation value" and brand name of a university. It pains me to see university students spend all their time studying for exams only to enter the workforce completely exhausted. The United States is a typical example of meritocracy. In the U.S., a fresh graduate is capable of designing a motor immediately after being hired. In Japan, fresh graduates can't speak English and they have no specialized knowledge. They need three or four years of retraining at their company before they can do their job. I decided that I had to change this situation, so I decided to start my own university. University education in Japan is all wrong. It needs to be changed. We need to cultivate the kind of graduates that society needs. We need graduates who can develop the kind of products that customers want. Universities should not be sending out people who passively wait for instructions, but professionals who can act on their own initiative, have the proper expertise, are highly productive, and can respond flexibly to change. To that end, I am now working to rapidly reform university education.
A major pillar of our reform is our teachers. Personally, I have had four teachers who changed my life. One was my science teacher when I was in the fourth grade, who introduced me to motors. My junior high school homeroom teacher convinced my older brother, who was the head of my family, to let me go to a technical high school. My high school homeroom teacher introduced me to a college where I could earn a scholarship, which allowed me to meet other young motor researchers. Thanks to those teachers, I was able to study electrical engineering for four years. If I had not met these four teachers, I might not be where I am today.
I want the teachers at our university to be like the passionate teachers who changed my life, and I believe that they are. Education is not just about "teaching"; it is about "nurturing" your students, and the four teachers I mentioned did exactly that for me.
On the other hand, as our new class of students, it is also important for you to put forth your own efforts.
People may betray people, and sometimes even a nation may betray its people. But effort? Effort never betrays anyone. I started a business from scratch, and I succeeded, so I know this firsthand. If you work hard, you will be rewarded for it. There are often people who complain that they are working hard but not getting anything in return, but they are not trying hard enough. The world is not so kind. However, if you work hard during these four years at university, this will surely become a turning point in your life, and I will take the lead in helping you to succeed.
I said that I came here today to convey my passion to you, and I believe that if this passion stays with you, your lives will change dramatically. I hope that this entrance ceremony becomes a major milestone in your lives. Congratulations.

"We will devote ourselves to our studies and lead fulfilling lives at school so that we might achieve personal growth..." On April 3, 2021, the Kyoto University of Advanced Science entrance ceremony for the new school year was held at Miyako Messe in Kyoto City. Last year, the university's entrance ceremony had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For the first time in two years, the KUAS was able to welcome its new class of students with hope and enthusiastic applause.
Accompanied by the Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra, about 860 new students grouped according to their respective faculties entered the ceremony hall to the applause of KUAS faculty and staff. The ceremony began with a relaxed atmosphere, with some students giving a V-sign to the camera that was being broadcast the ceremony live to their parents. After everyone was seated, President Maeda Masafumi took to the stage to deliver a message.
In his speech, President Maeda congratulated the students on their admission to KUAS and said, "You have made an excellent choice by enrolling at KUAS. The next four years will be of great value to you," expressing confidence in his university's readiness to welcome their new class of students. President Maeda also encouraged the incoming class to consult with the faculty and staff if they have ever need guidance, and emphasized that KUAS is a compact, powerful, and friendly university. Following President Maeda, Chairman Nagamori Shigenobu addressed the audience, asking for their help in making KUAS a first-class university. "Hard work never betrays anyone. If you make great efforts during these four years, it will be a turning point in your lives," Chairman Nagamori said, expressing his intention to take the lead in supporting the new class of students.
Following Chairman Nagamori's Greeting, Mr. Hatakeda of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Ms. Shigeyama of the Faculty of Humanities, Ms. Morita of the Faculty of Bioenvironmental Sciences, Mr. Sugita of the Faculty of Engineering, and Ms. Ono of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences lined up on stage, and Ms. Ono swore an oath as a representative of her fellow new students. Mr. Tokuyama of the Graduate School of Economics, representing the graduate students, pledged, "I will devote myself to academic research, while striving to cultivate my own character."
This year's graduation ceremony was broadcast live so that parents, who were unable to attend due to COVID-19 safety measures, could watch the proceedings. On the condition that students remained silent as they entered the ceremony hall, the students were able to take off their masks and smile for the camera, then replaced their masks before being seated.
