寄付4月に本学への正規学生（工学部）として入学が決まった合格者6名（1名はポーランドへの移動中のため急遽、不参加）とオンラインにて懇談会を実施しました。
冒頭には前田学長より学生へ向けてのメッセージを送り、その後、工学部部長の田畑修教授と今回のプロジェクトチームリーダーSmith Michael教員が各学生と現状、出国に際しての問題点等々について情報、意見交換を行いました。
5名のうち、2名は現在ポーランドに避難している難民キャンプから参加。ロシア侵攻が始まって、すぐに自宅のマンションが爆撃、また水や食糧を求めてスーパーに並んでいた人々にミサイルが落ちる現場を目の当たりにしたと目頭をおさえました。現在の難民キャンプもあと数日で閉鎖されるため、次の避難場所を探さなければいけない状況とのことです。
また、西ウクライナにいる女子学生は自宅近くの砲撃を受けて、リュックに少しの服だけを入れ、避難。もちろん勉強するための本、教科書なども持ち出せなかったが、家族が全員無事だったのがラッキーだったと話しました。これまで世界のどこかで戦争が起こっているというニュースを見てもどこかで遠い世界のことのように思っていたが、まさか、自分の身に起きたとはまだ信じられないと語りました。

日本の大学に進学することに関してはとても嬉しいが、家族を置いて一人で行くのに少し不安はあると希望と不安が入り混じった表情で語る学生もおりました。
本学としては、彼らの安全を守るためにもできるだけ早く入国ができるよう本学プロジェクトチームがより一層スピード感を持って準備を進めてまいります。

前田学長挨拶全文
学長の前田です。
皆さんは、本学がウクライナの大学で学び、研究することが困難になった学生を支援すると４月に表明後、速やかにオンライン入試を実施し、正規課程の工学部学生として入学が決まった第1号の学生です。
合計6名の入学を認めます。おめでとう。
（現状、合計25～30名程度の入学者を想定）
京都先端科学大学は、英語プログラムを提供している工学部、工学研究科、ビジネススクールの学びや研究の場を提供し、支援することをいち早く表明し、「List of Universities Helping Ukrainian Students 」に日本で唯一本学名が4月に掲載され、これまで約200名の志願がありました。
京都は、1000年の歴史のある都市です。キーウとも縁の深い街です。どうぞ、安心しておいでいただければと思います。みなさんを本学学生として受け入れることができることは私たちの喜びです。
極めて困難な状況にある皆さんの現状は想像するに余りあります。本学で学び、学業を継続し、ご自身と祖国の未来を作っていきましょう。私たち教職員は最大の支援をしてまいります。

第2グループ入試実施（18名） 5月12日（木）～５月20日（金）
On May 12, KUAS held an online round-table with the first batch of Ukrainian applicants (six students in total, with one in absentia) who applied and were accepted as regular students of the KUAS Faculty of Engineering on April 27.
At the beginning of the meeting, President Maeda delivered a welcome message to the students. After that, Prof. Osamu Tabata, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and Junior Associate Professor Michael Smith, leader of the KUAS Ukraine Support Project, exchanged information and opinions with the students about their current circumstances and problems they may face when leaving Ukraine.
Of the five students who attended, two are currently staying in a refugee camp in Poland. One of them recounted how their apartment building was bombed soon after the Russian invasion began, and that several people in their community were killed when a missile struck a line of people as they waited for water and food. The current refugee camp in Poland will soon close, and both students will need to look for a new place to take shelter.
One female student in Western Ukraine evacuated with only a few articles clothes in her backpack after the invasion began. She was not able to take any of her college textbooks or other possessions with her. However, she said she felt lucky that all of her family members were safe. She said that, in the past, when she saw news of a war happening somewhere in the world, she regarded it rather distantly, and that she still had a hard time believing what had happened to her.
Yet another student expressed a mixture of hope and anxiety, saying that he was very happy to be going to KUAS, but also little anxious about leaving his family behind and going alone.
To ensure their safety, KUAS is now preparing to bring all six students to Japan as soon as possible.

■Full Text of President Maeda’s Welcome Speech
My name is Masafumi Maeda, and I am the president of Kyoto University of Advanced Science.
After KUAS announced that it would support Ukrainian students and researchers displaced by the war, you were the first group of students to apply and be accepted as full-time engineering students through our rapid online admissions process.
In total, six of you will be admitted from the first group. Well done, and congratulations!
(Currently, we plan to admit a total of 25 to 30 Ukrainian students)
KUAS was one of the first universities in Japan to announce its commitment to provide learning and research opportunities to Ukrainian students, by offering admission to our Faculty of Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, and Business School. All these programs conduct their classes in English. KUAS was also the only university in Japan to have its name listed on the "List of Universities Helping Ukrainian Students" in April. Since then, we have received almost 200 applications.
Kyoto is a city with 1,000 years of history, and its connection with Kyiv is very strong. We hope you will feel at ease in coming to Kyoto, and we are very pleased to have you as our students.
I cannot begin to imagine the difficulties that you have faced up until now. It is my sincere hope that you will continue your studies at our university and build a new future for yourselves and for Ukraine. We, the faculty and staff of KUAS, will do our utmost to support you.
