本学に来るウクライナ学生を皆さんの仲間として温かく迎えましょう
2022年2月に始まったロシア軍のウクライナ軍事侵攻によりウクライナでは多くの方が犠牲になり、建物などの社会インフラにも破壊が及び、人々は日常生活でも多くの困窮を抱えています。このような状況に鑑み、私たちはウクライナの大学で学びや研究が困難になった学生や研究者に「学び」の場を提供することができるのではないかと考え、4月6日にウクライナ学生・研究者を支援する旨を発表し、工学部でこれまで行っていたオンライン英語入試システムを活用し、200人弱の志願者から厳正なる入試面接を実施しました。面接は現在も継続しています。
6月2日現在14名の合格者が決定し、現地学生と本学のマイケル講師を中心とするプロジェクトチームが招聘状をはじめビザの申請取得、パスポート確認など、様々な制約条件をクリアしてきました。第1弾として合格者6名の学生が、6月5日に来日し、うち5名は６月６日に本学に到着しました。今、学長としてお伝えしたいのは、様々な困難を乗り越えて本学に至った合格者たちを仲間として温かく迎え入れようとする気持ちを皆さんに持ってもらいたいというお願いです。
私たちの大学は2019年に京都先端科学大学に名称変更し、「教育改革の先駆者となり、世界人財を輩出する」ことをミッションとして掲げ、国際化にむけ様々な改革を進めています。2020年度には英語で授業を行う工学部を開設し、現在は留学生も一緒に勉学に励み、世界に開かれた大学に一歩一歩確実に前進しています。建学の精神の一つに「現在と未来の世界に先頭を切って貢献していく」を掲げている本学が今なすべき挑戦は、ウクライナ復興のために、次の世代を担う若いウクライナ学生を正規学生として受入れ、安全と自由な環境の中で世界各地から集まってきている学生たちと一緒に学び、その「学び」を通じて新しい未来を生み出すことではないかと考え、今回の学生受入れを決断しました。
本学では、理事長の寄付金により授業料の免除、住宅（本学国際学生寮）の整備をおこないます。そして渡航費、生活費や生活物資等の支援は学内関係者（学生・教職員）の寄付金、企業のご協賛、財団などと共に準備しました。
皆さんの仲間になるウクライナの学生たちは今後、随時、来日します。
6日に到着する学生の一人は5月のオンライン近況報告で「惨状を目の当たりにした」と目に涙を浮かべて写真を見せてくれました。
彼、彼女らは皆、国内に、親族、友人、仲間を残しながら未来を作るために日本に来ております。学生諸君には、ウクライナの学生を同世代の学生、仲間として温かく迎え入れてほしいのです。そして、ウクライナの学生諸氏と接する中で、世界で起きている厳しく理不尽な現状を、自分ごとと受け止め、広い視野で世界を見るとことができる人に成長して欲しいと願っています。
皆さん、ウクライナ学生を温かく仲間として迎え入れ、ともに未来を作りましょう。

Please Warmly Welcome Our New Ukrainian Students
Since February of 2022, the Russian military invasion of Ukraine has robbed thousands of Ukrainians of their lives and millions more of their homes. In response to this situation, KUAS resolved to support Ukrainian students and researchers who have been displaced by the war, and on April 6, our university announced that it would provide Ukrainians with a place to continue their studies at the KUAS Faculty of Engineering. Using a rigorous online interview process pioneered by the Faculty of Engineering, KUAS has screened just under 200 Ukrainian applicants. These interviews are still ongoing, with 13 students having been accepted so far.
With help from these newly accepted Ukrainian students, a project team led by Michael Smith, one of our faculty members, is working to clear various bureaucratic obstacles, such as obtaining deferrals of service from the Ukrainian military or acquiring emergency evacuation visas.
On June 5, these efforts bore fruit when the first group of six Ukrainian students arrived in Japan, and five of these students have come to KUAS on June 6. As President of the university, I ask that you all give these students a warm welcome, as they have overcome many difficulties to join us.
In 2019, our university changed its name to Kyoto University of Advanced Science. After that, we underwent rigorous reforms to internationalize and "become pioneers in educational transformation and produce world-class professionals.” Step by step, we are making progress toward becoming an open, international university. One of the founding principles of our University is to "take the lead in contributing to the world, both present and future.” Accepting these young Ukrainian students as full-time students, and providing them with the opportunity to study with other students from all over the world in a safe environment, is our answer to that pledge. By creating the next generation of Ukrainian leaders, we can contribute to the building of a new future for their nation.
With the kind financial support of our Chairman, KUAS will provide these Ukrainian students with tuition waivers and free housing in the KUAS International Student Dormitories. Furthermore, their travel expenses, living expenses, and daily necessities will be offset by donations from our students, faculty, and staff as well as other foundations, partner companies and donors.
In May, during an online conference, one of the Ukrainian students showed me photos of his neighborhood in flames, and told me of the destruction that he witnessed firsthand. These students will be arriving sporadically throughout the coming weeks, but all of them are coming to Japan to build new lives for themselves while leaving their families and friends behind. Please welcome them warmly, and act as their new friends in Japan. Through your interaction with these students, I hope that you will learn more about the injustice that these students have experienced, and gain a broader perspective of the world.
Let’s give these students a warm welcome as our new friends, and build a new future together.
