Professor OHSHIMA Hiroyuki

In this edition of “Tell Us Teacher,” we interviewed Professor Hiroyuki Ohshima, who talked to us about how, “Business administration is not only an academic discipline, but also a true practical science that can be put to great use in our lives.”

Business administration is a part of everyone’s life. It starts with seeing and feeling the current era.

Q:Your current specialty is management strategy, but I heard that you originally majored in physics at university.

At university, I belonged to the astrophysics laboratory in the faculty of science’s physics department. My advisor asked me to create a measurement program that would analyze the composition of meteorites, etc. At the time, there were no computers, so I had to assemble a computer myself. That was an interesting experience, so after graduating from university, I started working for a computer-related company. As a system engineer (SE), I mainly designed business systems for companies, but I used that experience to move to a consulting company and became a management consultant. I became a university professor 15 years ago. I often tell students that once they get a job, they should focus on working hard and acquiring skills so that they can advance in and change their careers. I use my experience as a SE and consultant in my classes and seminars, and I still often go out for drinks with my colleagues from those days.

Q:Could you tell us about your specialized research and the courses you supervise?

My areas of expertise are “management strategy” and “IT strategy.” I am currently researching “corporate reform using IT” and I am in charge of a course on  “management strategy theory.”

The main goal of my lectures is to help students become familiar with business administration. It is often thought that management is something that only the top management of a company thinks about, but this is not the case. There are many things related to management and management strategy in students’ everyday lives. For example, imagine you were selling 500-yen and 600-yen bento boxes and the 500-yen boxes were selling better. If you added a 700-yen bento box to the line-up, the 600-yen bento box would sell more as it is now seen as a mid-range item compared to the low and high-priced items.

This is a natural result of consumer psychology, but you will overlook these trends if you are just thinking about them within the confines of your mind. In this way, I pick up topics from stores and companies that the students are familiar with regularly to make the lessons easier to understand and to pique their interest.

Q:Does this mean that when you are thinking of management strategies that you have to ensure that they are based on reliable information?

Basically, yes. We are in the age of IT, and a higher level of computerization has deeply penetrated the backgrounds of not only corporations but also consumers. Moreover, the speed at which things change and develop  is accelerating at every moment. It is no longer possible to keep up with changes simply by relying on intuition, perseverance, and passion, as in the past.

Therefore “number sensibility” has become important. You should never blindly accept information and data, so, it’s not enough to just look at numbers like a computer. You can confirm the information as a result, but you won’t be able make out a strategy. And since we are human, we make mistakes. That’s why numbers are only basic information for us to reference.

Rather, we need to have the sensitivity to put those numbers to use 100% or even more. It is certainly important to understand the numbers, but it’s just theoretical information. The real world, markets, and consumers are living people, and they are always in a complex state of flux and change. This is why, in addition to data analysis, it is most important to see and feel the movements of the world we live in now.

Q:If there was one thing you would ask of future students, what would it be?

I really think youth is a privilege. I also think it’s good to believe that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. But if you don’t try anything, you won’t even know what your weaknesses are or what kind of things you dislike.
So, take a step forward. It’s important to challenge yourself. You have to look at the world around you. Try to be interested in everything. Be curious. That’s all that matters.
You might make some mistakes and wrong decisions, but all of those things will be beneficial in your future. First, be open to your hopes and dreams, and then have the courage to take the first step towards them.

Q:How do you spend your days off?

Relaxing at a nearby park with my two daughters. Taking a deep breath under the shade of the trees. This is the best. I am just going about my day, but I forget about the passing of time and feel refreshed both physically and mentally. Actually, that was a long time ago. My daughters are grown up now, so they won’t go to the park with me anymore. We only go to the movies or dinner once in a while.

Speaking of hobbies, I would say Go and Shogi. When I was young, I went to a Shogi dojo and Go club. I hadn’t played for a while, but I had an opportunity learn from a professional Go player who came to our university, so I started again. Also, I bought new Go software for my computer. This software uses technology called deep learning, made famous by Google’s “AlphaGo” AI, which beat the world’s top professionals. Shogi players started losing to computers a long time ago, but now Go players are no longer a match for computers. It’s really amazing how far computers have come.

My favorite books are by Ryotaro Shiba, as mentioned by other teachers. I love his portrayal of Tsuginosuke Kawai in “Touge,” Masujiro Omura in “Kashin,” and Gentaro Kodama in “Saka no Ue no Kumo.”
