Professor FUJIKAWA Yoshio

In this edition of “Ask the Teacher,” we asked Professor Fujikawa of the Department of Business Administration about the necessity of accounting. As he says, “knowledge of accounting can give you the strength to overcome any new wave of change.”

No matter the industry, accounting skills can give you the skills to survive.

Q:Have you worked for private companies before?

I am from Hiroshima Prefecture. I studied at the Faculty of Economics at Kobe University. At university, I did not want to learn anything specialized but rather thought that I would be able to learn various things after I graduated and entered the workforce. However, while I was at university I moved into a dormitory and was greatly influenced by my senior classmates that I met there. This would become a valuable experience for me later on. My classmates came from a variety of backgrounds, including international students and people who had returned to university after working for a while. Their attitude and willingness to learn was a great inspiration.

After graduating from university, I went to work for a general company. As a technical sales representative for an information equipment manufacturer, I was mainly involved in overseas sales and trading. In such a position, a certain level of language ability was required, and I had a lot of trouble, especially in business negotiations. However, since I was dealing with English documents on a daily basis, I was able to acquire a certain level of English reading comprehension.

After working there for five years, I decided to study accounting at a graduate school.

As long as you have the will, you can always start learning again at any time in life. I believe that it was the stimulation I received from my seniors during my university days that pushed me to take on new challenges.

Q:Does understanding accounting help with finding a job?

I started my teaching career at KUAS in 1996, when I was 35 years old. In my lectures, I talk about how to read financial statements, which are the basis of accounting, and how to analyze management using actual examples of listed companies.

By looking at financial statements, we can understand the current business situation of a company. In a sense, they are like a mirror that reflects the current state of a company.

If you acquire specialized knowledge in accounting, you will be able to become a certified public accountant or a tax accountant. For those who aim to work for a general company or become a public servant, acquiring knowledge of accounting as a general education will be a great help after entering society, and is essential for students studying business administration.

It is often said that the three sacred treasures in modern business are English, computer skills, and accounting skills. Accounting is essential an essential pillar for working people. I often use the analogy of Dragon Quest to talk about the equipment you need to face a boss in an RPG. Instead of fighting with your bare hands or easily available weapons and armor, it is easier to fight with powerful equipment that you have acquired through hard work, and I hope that you will enjoy the process of acquiring such equipment. It means that there is already a difference in power between those who have acquired accounting knowledge in their school days and those who have not.

Q:What is the essential significance of accounting science?

One thing is that accounting knowledge is a versatile and all-around ability. If you know a product, it will be a plus when you are handling it, but it will not be useful if you change to another industry. However, knowledge of accounting can be applied to any type of business (or occupation). It is the same whether you are working for a non-profit organization or a school. Therefore, once you acquire it, it becomes an all-around ability that provides you with mobility.

Another thing is that accounting knowledge transcends time. If you trace the origin of bookkeeping, it is said to have been born in Italy in the 14th century. The methods and systems established at that time are almost the same as the bookkeeping we are learning today. In other words, it is a system that has been handed down continuously from the Middle Ages to the present day for 600 or 700 years.

What I mean by that is that the people who lived in the Edo period must not have thought that the social system they lived under would change drastically with the Meiji Restoration. Even in the capitalist society that we live in now, we don’t know when and how it will change. But even if it suddenly changes one day, as long as there is an economic system that uses money, accounting is essential. In other words, you could say that knowledge of accounting can give you the ability to whether any new trend.

Q:You are also using the ‘Kyogakudo’ student store to teach your students, right?

This store is a practical learning platform where students plan, develop, and sell products on their own, and they can learn bookkeeping and accounting knowledge through experience. In many ways, this is different from management in the real world, but it allows students to experience “real-life management” in a near-real situation. Students also learn the importance of accounting, which is the basis of management, and its structure in a practical way.

Also, through these activities, students will be able to experience the joy of accomplishment. In this sense, I believe that all my students are fulfilling their roles energetically. On the other hand, there are times when they fail to achieve the expected results, but this is also a learning process. This is not to say that I encourage mistakes, but I think it is very meaningful for us to take the initiative and practice without fearing them.

Thus, I look for students to have the energy to take on any challenge.

Q:I hear that you are also a consultant for the American Football Club.

I like to watch sports in general. I especially like cheering for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp and Sanfrecce Hiroshima F.C., whose home is my hometown in Hiroshima Prefecture.

Another thing that has left a strong impression on me is watching the Super Bowl in the United States. Just before I started my teaching career, I flew to Phoenix, thinking “If I miss this chance now, I will never be able to watch it again.” It was a game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the halftime guest was Diana Ross. It was about 20 years ago, but I still remember it vividly.

I would like to encourage all students to take the plunge and do things that their current lifestyles permit them to. I think they won’t regret it. And yes, I am currently the advisor for the American Football Team at KUAS, which I am a fervent supporter of.
