【国際センターニュース】国際学生を支援するバディ・プログラムが始まりました／International Office News: “Buddy Program” Launched to Support International Students

京都先端科学大学国際センターでは、学生の多文化間交流を促進する取組みとして、バディ・プログラムをスタートし、10月15日(金)には第1回目のバディ・ミーティングをオンラインで開催いたしました。

このバディ・プログラムは、世界各国から入学する国際学生（※）が本学での学生生活に一日でも早く慣れることができるよう、ボランティアの在学生が生活上の様々な支援を行うとともに、在学生自身も多文化間交流を通じた学びの機会を得ることを目的とした活動です。

ミーティングの前半では、国際センターより、バディ・プログラムでの活動内容や、新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響により今もなお多くの学生が来日できない状況が続いている旨、説明がありました。後半では、バディ・プログラムに参加した学生と国際学生とがグループになり、「来日して間もない学生が必要とする支援は何か」、「自分ならどの様なサポートができるか」、「日本に来て実際に困ったことは何か」といったテーマについて、それぞれの参加者の体験もふまえディスカッションや事例紹介が行われました。

参加者からは、「海外からの学生達と話し合い、自分が今まで気づかなかった視点やアイデアを認識することができた」「日本人学生と国際学生の両方の視点から物事を見ることで、新たな発見ができると同時に多様性の重要性も認識できる良い機会となった」「今後も様々な文化的背景を持つ学生と交流したい」等の感想が寄せられました。

※国際学生とは、外国人留学生を含む国際的なバックグラウンドを持つ学生を指します。

International Office News: “Buddy Program” Launched to Support International Students

As an initiative to promote multicultural exchange among students, the International Office at Kyoto University of Advanced Science created the “Buddy Program” and held the first meeting on Friday, October 15.

The purpose of the Buddy Program is to help international students* from around the world to get used to student life at KUAS as soon as possible by providing them with support in their daily lives, as well as to provide current students with opportunities to learn through multicultural exchange.

In the first half of the meeting, the International Office staff explained details about the Buddy Program and about how most students are still unable to come to Japan due to COVID-19. In the second half of the session, international students and the students who volunteered as buddies were divided into groups to discuss topics such as "What kind of support do students who have just arrived in Japan need?", "What kind of support can I provide?", and "What difficulties have I encountered since coming to Japan?” based on their own experiences.

Participants commented, "By talking with students from overseas, I was able to become aware of viewpoints and ideas that I had not noticed before", " Looking at things from the perspective of both Japanese and international students was a good opportunity to make new discoveries and recognize the importance of diversity", and "I want to continue interacting with students from various cultural backgrounds."

*International students are defined as students with international backgrounds, including students from overseas.
