～Australia-Japan Wildlife Conservation and Education Foundation（オーストラリア日本野生動物保護教育財団)～

野生動物と国際関係にはどの様な関連があるのでしょうかーー。オーストラリア日本野生動物保護教育財団（AJWCEF）の理事長である水野哲男氏を講演者に迎え、6月4日に「オーストラリアの野生動物保護と国際関係」をテーマにご講演頂きました。

今回の講演会は、オーストラリア・ブリスベンと太秦・亀岡キャンパスをオンラインライブで結びライブで行いました。両キャンパスには、学生のみならず、バイオ環境学部教員4人も参加しました。

講演で水野氏は、人間の活動が大きな原因と考えられている自然環境の変化などにより、多大な被害を受けているオーストラリアの野生動物の現状を紹介。一方で、捕鯨などの国際紛争を考える際には、事実に基づいた情報を多方面から得ることが重要であると強調しました。さらに、参加者にそれらの情報をもとに自らの意見を持ち、様々な考え方の違いがあることも認識し受け入れることの大切さを訴えました。

質疑応答では、オーストラリア人と地元の野生動物との関係や、野生動物の保護について世間の関心や認識を高めるために何ができるかなど、参加者からの質問が相次ぎました。

水野氏は、クイーンズランド大学で獣医学の博士号を取得し、オーストラリアの野生動物をテーマにした教育プログラムや講演を通じて、オーストラリアと日本を結ぶ活動を続けられています。

水野氏の「思いやり」と「共感」というメッセージが多くの参加者の心に響くと同時に、物事を別の視点から捉える重要性への気づきを与えてくれました。

Round 2 of 2021 Academic Year “Becoming a Top-Tier Talent ~How Do I Get There~” Bioenvironmental Science Themed

～Australia-Japan Wildlife Conservation and Education Foundation（AJWCEF)～

What links wildlife to international relations? This time we found out from Dr. Tetsuo Mizuno, CEO of Australia-Japan Wildlife Conservation and Education Foundation (AJWCEF), who spoke on the topic of “Australian Wildlife Conservation and International Relations”.

Dr. Mizuno is the second speaker in our 2021-2022 “Becoming a Top-Tier Talent” event series. He is a PhD graduate in veterinary medicine from the University of Queensland who works tirelessly to bring Australia closer to Japan through educational programmes and presentations covering Australian wildlife.

This round of the event was held over Zoom on the evening of Friday, 4^th of June. Participants from both Kameoka and Uzumasa Campuses connected live with Dr. Mizuno, who is based in Brisbane, Australia. The participants consisted of not only students, but also 4 members from the Faculty of Bioenvironmental Science.

During his presentation, Mr. Mizuno covered the plight of wild animals in Australia, which are facing heavy casualties from changes in the natural environment that are caused largely by human activities. He spoke about the importance of developing one’s own opinion based on factual information from various sources when considering international disputes such as whaling, and also urged participants to become more aware and accepting of differences in perspective.

Participants demonstrated high levels of engagement during the Q&A session through questions covering the relationship of Australians with the local wildlife, to what they can do as individuals to increase interest and awareness among others.

Dr. Mizuno’s ultimate message regarding the value of compassion and empathy was clear, and many participants came away with a newfound motivation to see things from alternate perspectives.
