【学長メッセージ】大学生・大学院生の皆さんへ／[President's Message]To Undergraduate Students and Graduate Students

新型コロナ感染症の再拡大を受けて

対面の実習、実験、ゼミ、授業などがはじまり、キャンパス内に皆さんの声が聞こえるようになりました。大学らしい雰囲気が少しずつ戻ってきたところですが、ここ数日の報道でも明らかなように、全国的に感染者数は明らかに増加の傾向にあります。国内の一部の自治体においては医療現場の逼迫が懸念されています。世界的にワクチン開発は進められていますが、新型コロナ感染症の収束の目途は立っていません。アメリカ、インド、ブラジル、ヨーロッパでの感染拡大はいまだに続いています。

大学は、開かれた場です。ということは、様々な外の環境が持ち込まれてきます。つまり、大学キャンパスにおいても感染のリスクは常に存在するのです。本学も例外ではありません。皆さんも報道でご存じのとおり、若年層は重症化する割合が非常に低いと言われていますが、症状が軽い人からも感染は拡大します。改めて、皆さんには緊張感を持った対応をお願いしたいと思います。

本学では、この分野の専門家である感染症対策チームが徹底した対策を立て、万全を期していますが、あくまで皆さんが良識ある行動を実践することが前提です。まず、極めて効果の高いと言われている「マスク装着、密にならない行動、手洗い励行」を油断することなく、継続していただきたい。そして、学内や学外においての大人数、大声の飲食はもっともリスクの高い行為です。節度ある行動をしていただきたいと思います。具体的なガイドラインは感染症対策チームから、別途、指示がなされていますので、いまいちど、皆様には自分ごととしてしっかり認識してほしいと思います。

繰り返します。決してこの新型コロナ感染症を侮ったり、軽んじたりしてはなりません。慎重かつ丁寧な対応を地道に行ってください。その継続のみが、本学における学習、教育・研究の活動を守るのです。

Regarding the Resurgence of COVID-19

Here at Kyoto University of Advanced Science, face-to-face exercises, experiments, seminars, and classes have restarted. The sound of students’ voices and an atmosphere of normalcy has slowly returned to our campus. However, as the news reports of the past few days have made clear, the number of infected people across Japan is on the rise. In some prefectures around the country, there are concerns that hospital systems are being strained. Despite worldwide efforts to develop a vaccine, there is no indication that the virus is being brought under control, and it continues to spread in the United States, India, Brazil, and Europe.

Universities are open to the public. This means a university is in constant contact with all manner of outside parties, and that there is always a risk of infection. Our university is no exception. As you have seen in the press, young people are unlikely to suffer from life-threatening symptoms, but even people with mild symptoms can still spread the virus to others. Once again, I ask that all of our students act with care for the sake of those around them.

Our University's Infectious Disease Control Team are experts in their field, and they have developed a thorough set of countermeasures. They are doing everything possible to prevent an outbreak on our campus, but for their plans to succeed our students must act responsibly. I ask that all students continue to wear masks, avoid close contact with others, and wash their hands thoroughly. These measures are believed to be our best defense against the virus. Most of all, I ask that you do not let your guard down. Eating, drinking or talking loudly together, both on and off campus, are some of the riskiest activities. Instead, I ask that you continue to act with self-restraint. Remember that our fight against COVID-19 concerns you personally, and ensure that you follow the guidelines issued by the Infectious Disease Control Team.

I repeat: never underestimate COVID-19. Be steady and cautious. We must persevere to protect the campus community in which we all study, research and teach.
