Best Speaker

[Student News] Students Participate in Final GCL (Global Communication and Leadership) program Contest
The final English session of the GCL (Global Communication and Leadership) program for residents of KUAS International Student Dormitory was held on Wednesday December 16th, 2020. As a final event, a speech contest was held in Sagano Hall on the KUAS Uzumasa Campus.
The GCL program is an extracurricular activity designed to develop communication and leadership skills with the ultimate goal of improving participants’ persuasive speaking skills. In the spring semester, GCL sessions were held online via Zoom remote classrooms, and in the autumn semester sessions were held biweekly in Japanese and English.
The final contest was held in two stages, the preliminary and final stages. In the preliminary round, about thirty students from the dormitory divided into five six-person groups and gave 3-minute speeches on their chosen theme. Finalists were selected from each group.
Each of the five finalists gave their own speeches, telling stories about their hometown or proverbs learned from their parents.
After the contest, the winners were decided as follows:
- Best Speaker Award
-
Munetoki HOSOKAWA (first-year undergraduate, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Mechanical and Electrical System Engineering)
- SpeechCraft Award
-
Tsubasa HISAYOSHI (ditto)
- Passion Award
-
Shinjiro MATAYOSHI (ditto)
"To be honest, I was not good at English. But after admission to KUAS, I've trained hard and I've started to feel like my English isn’t so bad. During that time, I had an opportunity to give a presentation in English in front of a large number of people, and I had a very valuable experience." recalls Hosokawa, who won the Best Speaker award.
Dr. Yuko Shimizu, Associate Professor of the KUAS Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Department of Economics, who had acted as a director for the GCL program, commented, "In the beginning, the program participants were not very excited, but I was happy to see they gradually became more engaged throughout the program. The improvements made by the participants is impressive.”
