How to Apply (Undergraduate)

Below is a checklist of documents required for the Undergraduate Program application process. In general, documents are to be submitted through our online application system (TAO). However, you may be required to mail us some application documents by post. For more details, please see the Application Guidelines.

All applicants must submit the following documents. All documents must be written in English.

1. Photograph (.jpeg)

Upload a photograph to TAO. The photograph must be taken within the last three months, showing a portrait (front) view above the chest against a plain background. No caps or hats are allowed. 

2. Application essay (300 words minimum, 350 words maximum)

Please write one short essay in English that includes the following three topics:

  1. Why do you want to study at KUAS, and what do you want to learn while you are there?
  2. What makes you qualified to study at KUAS?
  3. How do you want to use what you will learn at KUAS in the future?

There are no specific requirements for the essay’s formatting, spacing, etc. 

3. Essay for Faculty of Bioenvironmental Sciences (200 words minimum, 250 words maximum / only required for Faculty of Bioenvironmental Sciences)

Faculty of Bioenvironmental Sciences applicants must write a short essay on their area of interest after watching the designated videos. To watch video, please click on the button below.
After watching the videos, please choose one of the five research fields from the department of your choice and write an essay detailing your interest and knowledge of the field. You must use at least two of the keywords that appear at the end of the section for the field you have selected.
There are no specific requirements for the essay’s formatting, spacing, etc.

4. Official academic transcript(s) for the last two years

Scan and upload your official transcripts to TAO. Transcripts should include all courses, credits, grades, and term information along with details about the grading system. If your transcripts are not in English, a certified translation must also be submitted.
Applicants who have not yet graduated from high school should submit their academic transcripts for their last two years of high school, and will be required to submit their complete and final high school transcripts when they enroll at KUAS.
Applicants who have already graduated from high school are required to submit their complete and final high school transcripts with their application.

5. Certificates of (expected) graduation

Scan and upload your certificate of graduation, or certificate of expected graduation, to TAO.
The KUAS Standardized Certificate of (Expected) Graduation Form is available. Download this form and ask your school, etc. to use it to create your Certificate of (Expected) Graduation. If you have not undergone any education for five or more years, and it is difficult for your high school to use the form, you may submit your high school diploma.

If your certificate is not in English, a certified translation must also be submitted.
Applicants yet to graduate from high school will be required to submit their certificate of graduation at the time of enrollment.

6. Standardized test results (MANDATORY: Faculty of Engineering, OPTIONAL:Faculty of Bioenvironmental Sciences / Faculty of Economics and Business Administration)

Submit your results for one of the standardized test listed in the Application Guidelines. If you have any difficulties meeting your application deadline due to testing schedules or any other issues, please contact us.

7. Evidence of English language proficiency(TOEFL iBT / IELTS / PTE / Duolingo)

Applicants whose native language is not English are required to prove their proficiency. Submit a valid score from one of the standardized tests listed below. Test scores must be less than two years old to be valid.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Internet-based (iBT): 75
Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: 50
Duolingo English Test 105

These test scores must be sent directly to us from their respective testing agency. KUAS does not accept results of these tests uploaded to TAO or emailed us by the applicants.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic overall band score: 5.5

Applicants should upload  a PDF scan of their score (TRF) to TAO.

KUAS also accepts TOEFL iBT Home Edition and MyBest™ scores.

8. A letter of recommendation

To gain perspective on what type of student you are, we require a letter of recommendation. This letter should be from a teacher at your most recent school who can affirm your achievements, character, dedication or leadership abilities.
The recommendation letter must be directly uploaded to your TAO application by your recommender. Please see the Application Guidelines for more details.

9. Copy of your passport or ID

Scan and upload the photo ID page of your passport to TAO. If you do not have a passport, upload a scan copy of your official government ID. The scanned copy must be in color and clearly show your photo, name, and passport number.

10. Copy of residence card (only for the applicants who have valid Japanese resident status)

If you are a resident in Japan, scan and upload a copy of your residence card to TAO. The scanned copy must be in color and include both sides of the card.
