Yu Than, a second-year master’s student at KUAS Graduate School of Engineering and member of the Electrical Machines and Drive Systems Lab (EMDS), has received a Best Paper Award from the 3rd International Conference on Power, Control and Computing Technologies (ICPC2T 2024), held in India in January 2024. Out of the 161 papers presented at this conference, his work was one of three that earned an award. This international conference is supported by IEEE Industry Application Society (IAS), and the published papers are indexed by famous engineering databases, such as IEEE Xplore and Scopus.

Than conducts research on “Hybrid Carrier Frequency Based Modulation Strategy to Improve Efficiency of Voltage Source Inverters” and is supervised by Dr. Fuat Kucuk. A common technique for switching transistors in motor inverters is to generate gate pulses by comparing a sinusoidal reference command with a fixed-frequency carrier waveform. This inevitably causes unnecessary switching around the minimum or maximum value of the reference command and decreases the inverter efficiency. Than’s work proposes a novel method based on hybrid-frequency carrier waveforms to overcome this obstacle. The main objective is to apply lower frequency carrier waveforms when the reference command is around minimum or maximum value, which ultimately reduces switching losses and improves inverter efficiency without loss in motor performance. The proposed method has been experimentally implemented, and significant improvement in efficiency has been observed.
