Student Spotlight: From Ghana to Kyoto

Mar 20, 2026

Deciding to study abroad is not just about earning a degree—it is about choosing an environment that will shape your future and challenge you to grow. To give you a look at what that journey looks like, we are spotlighting Abass Saddique, a first-year undergraduate student from Sunyani, Ghana.

Abass is currently pursuing his dreams in the Faculty of Bioenvironmental Sciences at Kyoto University of Advanced Science (KUAS) specifically in the Kameoka Campus. Here is his experience in his own words.

Why Japan and KUAS?

Abass chose KUAS because he wanted to study in a country known for discipline, innovation, and safety. For him, Japan stood out for its technological advancement, peaceful society, and strong sense of order. As an international student, safety was a top priority, but so was the opportunity to experience a culture that values respect and responsibility. He found that KUAS offered the perfect balance: an international learning environment where he could study science in depth while gradually improving his Japanese skills.

A Dream of Neuroscience

Academically, I have a clear dream. I want to become a researcher in neuroscience and neurology, and ultimately pursue my ambition of becoming a neurosurgeon.”

He has always been fascinated by how the human brain—a small organ—controls thoughts, memory, movement, and emotion. By studying Applied Biological Science, he is building the scientific foundation he will need to contribute to future medical breakthroughs.

Adapting to Life in Kyoto

Life in Japan has been a meaningful experience for Abass. One of the things that surprised him most was the pervasive culture of respect and the sense of order in daily life.

While the language barrier was a challenge when he first arrived, he has been steadily improving through the Japanese language support provided by KUAS. Between semester classes and intensive vacation programs, he is gaining the confidence to navigate his new home with ease.

Independence and Tradition

Managing his studies while working part-time at a traditional Japanese dashimaki restaurant, has taught Abass new levels of discipline and time management. Through his work, he has gained a deeper appreciation for Japanese culture and its famous attention to detail.

Outside the classroom, he enjoys playing soccer and exploring the vibrant city of Kyoto. From the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest to the historic streets of Higashiyama, he is making the most of the natural beauty and atmosphere that his new home offers.

Growth and Advice for Future Students

Since coming to KUAS, Abass has grown more patient and adaptable. Moving to a new country pushed him out of his comfort zone and helped him discover his own resilience. He believes that independence is about taking responsibility for one’s goals and moving forward even when things feel difficult.

His advice for students considering KUAS is simple: come with an open mind and a clear goal. For those looking for a place to challenge themselves and work toward their dreams in a safe, structured environment, Abass believes KUAS is the perfect place to be.
