Kyoto University of Advanced Science (KUAS) recently had the distinct honor of welcoming esteemed diplomat Ambassador Rick Barton to our Uzumasa Campus in Kyoto. On Wednesday, April 9th, the renowned expert in conflict resolution and international relations delivered a timely and insightful lecture to an engaged audience of over 100 KUAS students and faculty members.
A Voice of Experience in Global Diplomacy

Ambassador Barton brings a wealth of experience from the highest levels of international diplomacy and peacebuilding. His distinguished career includes pivotal roles such as:
- Deputy High Commissioner at the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) under the late Sadako Ogata
- First Assistant Secretary of State for Conflict and Stabilization Operations
- U.S. Representative at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)
Having worked to promote peaceful change in over 40 conflict zones, Ambassador Barton offers a unique perspective grounded in real-world action. Currently a lecturer at Princeton University and author of Peace Works: America’s Unifying Role in a Turbulent World, his expertise provided KUAS students with invaluable insights.
