Supporting International Students Impacted by Visa Policy Changes in the United States
Jun 9, 2025
GeneralAt Kyoto University of Advanced Science (KUAS), we are committed to providing opportunities for students to continue their education in times of uncertainty. In response to recent developments affecting international students enrolled in American universities, KUAS has established a special admissions pathway for eligible students seeking academic continuity.
KUAS currently offers all-English programs in the Faculties of Engineering, Bioenvironmental Sciences, and Economics & Business Administration. (See below for details.)
This initiative is intended for non-U.S. nationals who were formally enrolled in, or preparing to enroll in, a four-year college or graduate school in the United States and who now face obstacles to continuing their studies due to visa disruptions.
Eligibility
To be considered for this special admissions pathway, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Hold (or have recently held) an F-1 visa, or be in the process of obtaining one, and be a non-U.S. national.
- Be currently enrolled in or have received admission to a U.S.-based four-year undergraduate program or graduate school.
- Be able to submit documentation, such as an I-20 form, proof of F-1 visa status or application, and (if available) the documents submitted to the U.S. institution at the time of original admission.
- Be prepared to begin studies at KUAS in the Fall 2025 semester, starting in September.
Available Programs
KUAS will primarily accept students into the following English-medium undergraduate programs:
- Faculty of Engineering
- Faculty of Bioenvironmental Sciences
- Faculty of Faculty of Economics and Business Administration
Graduate-level applications may be considered in:
- Graduate School of Engineering
- Graduate School of Bioenvironmental Sciences
- Graduate School of Business Administration
Admission will generally be to the first year of the undergraduate program. Graduate students may be admitted as research students or non-degree students initially, depending on the program and their academic background. No scholarships are available under this emergency pathway.
If you wish to major in a field other than those listed above, admission to other faculties or graduate schools may still be considered, provided that you have native-level proficiency in Japanese and are deemed capable of taking classes conducted in Japanese without any difficulty.
Application Process
- Applications will be processed through KUAS’s online application platform. Details will be shared with eligible applicants upon inquiry.
- A non-refundable application fee of 5,000 yen is required.
- All applicants must follow KUAS’s regular admissions review process, including eligibility checks, faculty placement, and visa documentation procedures.
- Successful applicants will receive a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) to support their student visa application to Japan.
- All required documents must be submitted no later than June 30, 2025. However, if you hold Japanese nationality and do not require a Japanese visa, this requirement does not apply to you.
- Please note that even if these application procedures are completed, Japanese immigration services may not be able to issue a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) in time for enrollment.
Important Notes
- Mid-semester or retroactive transfer is not possible.
- This initiative is subject to capacity and cannot guarantee placement for all applicants.
- All applicants must be prepared to independently arrange for relocation, funding, and visa processing.
