Student Spotlight: Belonging in Kyoto
Jan 28, 2026

Moving to a new country can be daunting, but finding your “crew” might be easier than you think.
Daniya Tat, a student from Cambodia, arrived in Japan with a love for matcha and a passion for data. As a first-year undergrad student the Faculty of Economics & Business Administration, she found a welcoming community waiting for her.
“It Was Like They Chose Me.” Financial support is often a key factor in the decision for international students. For Daniya, the university’s swift scholarship offer gave her the confidence to pursue her studies abroad.
“Just a month after applying, the university sent me an offer of a scholarship,” she recalls. “I felt that they’d seen me for what I’d done… It was like they chose me.”

Data Science & Daily Life

Now, Daniya is diving into the world of Data Science and Business Mathematics. She credits her professors for their dedicated support, ensuring every student grasps complex concepts.
But it is the social atmosphere that has made the biggest impact. Despite being in the country for only a short time, she has already formed a close circle of friends. “I’ve only been here for a month, but it just feels like I belong,” she says.
